William L. Shay, PhD serves as Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.
Dr. Shay brings more than three decades of leadership and executive experience across public and private higher education institutions. A sociologist by training, he leads CDU’s academic affairs administration, with a focus on academic quality, faculty development and institutional accountability.
Dr. Shay serves as CDU’s Accreditation Liaison Officer to the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). He completed WSCUC’s Assessment Leadership Academy in 2015–16.
Dr. Shay also leads CDU’s Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) faculty development initiative, which supports effective teaching practices and student success. The program is funded in partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF).
From 1992-99 he served The University of Michigan as the inaugural manager of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. At Harvard University from 1999-2005 he was the founding executive director of a basic social science and then life science research center. As a graduate of the Harvard Leadership Academy, he also served as a management delegate to the Regional Problem-Solving Team of the Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers. From 2005 to 2009, Dr. Shay also led the academic personnel office of the College of Letters & Science at the University of California, Los Angeles.
